Recommended Itineraries8. Seeking Silla’s History, Historic Site Exploration2025.10.20

This journey takes you to the heart of Gyeongju, a city that holds a thousand years of history. It’s a route I want to recommend to those visiting Gyeongju for the first time. Shall we enter this route containing Gyeongju’s essence where past and present walk side by side?

A two-day, one-night itinerary including total walking and vehicle travel, this is an ambitious, all-in-one itinerary that captures everything of Gyeongju: the majestic Buddhist art encountered at Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, the gentle night view of Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, the serene scenery of Gyeongjuhyanggyo Local Confucian School and Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex, the breath of astronomy and science felt at Cheomseongdae Observatory, and the historical experience completed at Gyeongju National Museum.

From the very first step, the atmosphere is awe-inspiring! The elaborate halls of Bulguksa Temple viewed from the platform will make your heart solemn. Walking there myself, it was much more massive than seen in tourist photos, and with each step up the stairs, I felt the devotion and faith of Silla artisans. With scenery that shifts by season, the scent of incense, and the tranquil footsteps of monks, this sacred site is a deeply spiritual place to begin your day in Gyeongju.

Seokguram Grotto appears when you go up a bit from Bulguksa Temple, and from the entrance, the subtle stone smell and tranquility will calm the mind. Entering the main chamber, I couldn’t help but admire the seated Buddha statue and elaborate wall carvings that unfolded before my eyes. Looking directly at the ceiling and walls and feeling the grotto structure and geometric perfection with my body, the phrase “the world’s only masterpiece” became real. The scene of sunshine casting light remains in my heart much more deeply than photographs.

After a full day of walking, the vegetarian course meal at Ssukbujaengi, served in a cozy retro-style hanok, offered the perfect healing moment of the trip! Each bite of the deep-fried mushrooms with sweet and sour sauce and soy meat tteokbokki was both nourishing and bursting with flavor—truly impressive for plant-based fare. As I enjoyed the lotus leaf rice while gazing out at the walking trail beyond the window, I was struck by how beautifully Gyeongju’s nature and cuisine harmonized.

Arriving at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond just before sunset, I felt as if I had slipped back in time to ancient Silla, the glowing lights reflecting off the pond created an almost dreamlike scene. Strolling slowly around the water, I paused often to take photos—each time, the mirrored image looked even grander than the real thing, leaving me breathless. Thanks to the lights spreading over the water in the night air and the quiet sounds of water, I fully experienced the romance and leisure of the ancient royal palace.

Tucked away in a quiet alley, stepping between the old buildings and stone walls of Gyeongjuhyanggyo Local Confucian School feels like entering a time capsule. The serene scenery, harmonizing with the appearance of students actually studying inside, is much more peaceful than photos. Walking around Gyeongjuhyanggyo, I could feel even a little of the scholarly energy of Silla’s national academy from a thousand years ago. Seasonal blooms and tranquil gardens added charm to every step, turning the stroll into a quiet joy.

Walking through the vast cluster of royal tombs, I felt like stepping on a thousand years with my feet. Photos taken at the magnolia tree photo zone have a more dreamlike atmosphere than reality, and exploring the interior of Cheonmachong Tomb allowed me to imagine somewhat the lives and funeral culture of the ancient Silla people. The moment I stopped walking and looked at the ancient tombs, I felt like I had become a time traveler.
