Recommended Itineraries9. Delicious Gyeongju Culinary Journey2025.10.20

In Gyeongju, time lingers not only in its ancient buildings but also in its flavors. This culinary journey let you experience the essence of Gyeongju at the dining table rather than among historic sites. Shall we follow the trail of local restaurants that define the city’s taste?

This 8.3 km route—on foot and by car—lets you savor the very essence of Gyeongju, infusing your journey with flavors that linger like memories. I visited some of the city’s most iconic local food spots and brought back more than just full stomachs.

The very first jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles) eatery in Gyeongju, serving locals since 1982! The moment you take the first bite, sweet and sour seasoning and chewy noodles spread throughout your mouth, making travel fatigue disappear instantly. The retro vibe makes it a photogenic stop, and sampling small bites of dishes like yubu (fried bean curd), eomuk (fishcake), and cold jjolmyeon adds a fun twist to the experience. The hand-pressed noodles carry the unmistakable craft of a seasoned master—simple, satisfying, and unforgettable.

A soft whiff of sweet red bean teases your nose, and with one bite, the moist bread bursts with rich, earthy bean flavor. There’s something about its legacy, dating back to 1939, that makes every bite taste like history wrapped in nostalgia. Its elegant ridged pattern also makes it a perfect gift! Step inside the shop and you’re greeted by the comforting aroma of baking bread and the quiet hum of old ovens, an experience that lingers as part of your journey.

With youthful energy in the air, Hwangnidan-gil is lined with charming shops, cozy cafés, and quirky restaurants—perfect for slowing your pace and soaking it all in. I paused at a small dessert café that I stumbled upon mid-walk, snapped photos, savored a sweet treat, and explored nearby alleys filled with murals and handmade goods. With Cheomseongdae Observatory and Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex also nearby, it’s the perfect spot for a walk after meals.

This traditional Korean table d’hôte restaurant is located near Cheomseongdae Observatory. Wrapping your own ssam (leaf wraps) with fresh greens and tasting an array of side dishes brings out the simple joy of a wholesome meal. Looking at the full table setting at each table, I could feel the “Gyeongju-like dining” with my whole body. Whether you’re with family, friends, or a loved one, it’s a place where heartfelt cooking and a peaceful setting come together—perfect for slowing down and savoring the moment.

After our meal, we took a slow walk around Cheomseongdae Observatory, letting the gentle stroll help with digestion. It is stunning at any hour, but in daylight—framed by seasonal blooms—it feels especially enchanting. Examining the stone structure up close, I could physically feel the precision of the observatory design and the greatness of Silla’s scientific technology.

A place famous for gimbap generously filled with egg garnish! When you bite, the fluffy egg and ingredients harmoniously fill your mouth. I could directly feel that the reason residents and travelers have long loved it is precisely because of this taste. Hearty but straightforward, the gimbap is optimal as a snack during travel too.
